does it start without the choke? if it does you are probably flooding the engine with the choke readjust it
sounds like your choke isn't working or isn't set correctly

i dont know alot , but i think there is a piece on the monovalve called an iac valve. if you have a book, look it up . i know it has alot to do with idle, not sure on start event

Check to make choke is working properly - if so pump accelerator to the floor once and release - then start
To adjust the choke on a 1978 350 4 barrel Chevy truck engine, turn the screw on the side of the carburetor. This screw is located in the side of the carburetor. Turning the screw to the right makes the choke open farther. Turn to the left to make the choke open less.
There is no choke on an injection system. The cold start enrichment system performs this function.
