what condition is the starter in ? is the battery fully charged ? needs to spin fast to start when cold assuming the glow plugs ok
Because it is winter, it is cold and you have a diesel engine. They use glow plugs to help ignite diesel in cold weather. Have the glow plugs checked.
If your car is a Diesel engine and when you turn the key on it ignites the glow plugs because diesel gas can congeal (become thick) in cold weather. So the glow plugs warm the diesel and turn it back to a more liquid state.
Most diesel engines are hard to start when it is cold. Plugging the diesel engine block heater in will help the engine start.
diesel engines do not use spark plugs because diesel has more oil, burns slower, and is more difficult to ignite. Therefor spark plugs are insufficient with just spark so instead they use glow plugs witch provides a high amount of heat to the fuel and ignites more quickly and reliably. The amount of compression pressure in a diesel engine is sufficient to produce enough heat to ignite the fuel. The glow plugs are only used on a cold start.
no not if its the 2.5lt di ( direct injection) if your van will not start on cold mornings try a boster battrey
No, Glow Plugs are used to help start a cold engine. They can also be used for emisions (cold start up).
Glow plugs and engine block heaters
my 2007 dodge sprinter will not start eventhough i let the engine glow a couple times. now from trying the battery is some what dead so i am charging it any help thank you Nathan
No they do not, After engine is running there is no need for glow plugs because there is enough heat in the cylinders to warm the fuel. The glow plugs are designed to heat up the cold diesel fuel on start up only. Actually glow plugs will cycle briefly after engine start up to keep the cold fuel from bringing down cyl temp until the engine warms up. A power stroke will keep glow plugs on for up to 180 sec. A chev will run considerably less I believe.
Most unlikely. Glow plugs simply preheat to allow the engine to turn over from cold.
Yes, it is normal
Glow plugs work like cigarette lighters in your car. They get very hot very quickly. When you cycle them (turn on the ignition) the timer relay turns them on for approx 6 seconds to warm the air in the cylinders. On a Ford they operate at 6 volts so they don't burn out. A diesel engine has no spark plugs but the fuel ignites from the heat of the air as the air is compressed. In a cold engine this would take a long time so a diesel has glow plugs to help with the process. They do wear out so if your diesel is hard to start when cold but fires right away after being warmed up check them out. You can do this with a multimeter. Check for resistance in the plugs. If there is a dead short then the plug is not working and not providing heat to aid in starting.
