This is a fairly common problem on these cars. More than likely it's a shifter cable problem. There are two cables that operate the transmission. One is for when you move the shifter from left to right. The other is for front to back. First go out and open the hood. Look down on the driver side...towards the back of the engine at the transmission. You'll see two fairly large cables hooked to levers on the transmission. Make sure these have not come loose. Also, the rubber inserts in the cable ends will wear out. This is the most common problem. If these check out ok go to the interior. Remove the shift knob and take off the boot/console top. You'll be able to see the cables running to the shifter. Perform the same checks. You can also shoot some lithium grease on the cables to help them operate a little more smoothly.
If you find that the rubber inserts are missing you have a couple of options. First is to replace the cable. $50 each for an aftermarket or closer to $100 for AC Delco. For a temporary fix....one that I've been using for quite a while now is to buy a package of windshield wiper motor mount grommets. Cut one in half. It's just the right size to fit in the cable end. Put the cable back on and if you can, put a thin large washer on also to help keep the grommet in place. You'll now have a functioning shifter cable. I've been using one like this for about 6 months.
put a can of trans x one of the pumps are probably stuck follow the directions on the can
it is stuck in 1st and the shifter is broken SOMEWHERE it might even be inside the trans. their are shifting forks inside the trans.
check your shifter bushings, next would be inside the trans at the shift collar.
your shift lever bushings are bad, easy fix.
could you be more specific?
If a transmission for a car becomes stuck between 1st and 2nd gear the fluid should be changed. Old fluid in a transmission can cause hard shifting and stuck gears.
Usually caused by a worn front band. Suggest to have trans serviced, and bands adjusted.
Transmission. If an Automatic trans and car sounds like it is always in '1st' gear (engine rpm very high, has a lot of torque when you press or release the gas pedal) the shift cable has the trans in 1st or low gear, or there is a problem within the transmission preventing it from shifting (low fluid level, bad solenoid on or in the trans, bad shifter assembly)
check the vacume line to the trans if that is good change the vacume valve that the line goes to.
1st- 2.52:1 2nd- 1.52:1 3rd-1:1
It is probably the governor gear. It is accessible from outside the trans. Put a new one in, drop the trans pan, drain all fluid and clean out the filter and refill.
From page 46 of a 1966 Volkswagen Owners Manual, the gear ratios are: 1st gear 3.80:1 2nd gear 2.06: 1 3rd gear 1.26:1 4th gear 0.89:1 Reverse 3.88: 1
