The 1998 Lincoln Continental belt tensioner assembly is held in place by three retaining bolts. Remove the retaining bolts. The belt tensioner will come off.
Ford motor company sells a kit of tools for removal of radios in the 96-98 tears. After removal of the radio you will have to have a code to get it to work. Consult your Lincoln dealer.
for the removal, pull of the upper radiator sight shield, make sure that the headlamp switch and the ignition switch are turned off, raise the headlamp assembly retainers by pushing rearward and then pulling up to save time. disconnect the headlamp assembly wiring harness and remove the headlamp assembly, install just do the reverse.
Brake LightInside the trunk, remove rubber gasket from the plastic latch cover. Pull off the latch cover and then pull off carpet lining from the trunk walls. There will be 4 nuts holding the brake light assembly in place, unscrew only the four exposed ones! Neglect the ones inside the holes in the trunk wall, those have nothing to do w/ the brake light assembly. Slowly remove the assembly and twist the defected bulb housing counter-clockwise and pull off the faulty bulb. This procedure for removal is ineffective.. It does not show how the red exterior lense can be remove to expose the light brake socket for removal of the lamp.You cannot twis the bulb assembly and pull in a Lincoln Continental 2000.The access to the light bulb is to remove the exterior lense. Perhaps a refinement on how to will many on how to replace brake lighs.
Spray Aero Kroil on for two days in a row. You are now to loosen the allen head shoulder bolt the tensioner swings on. If your tensioner has the belt guard you will need to loosen the shaft bolt that runs through the pully to remove the guard so the belt will slide by it and allow for removal of the entire tensioner assembly. If you are removing the tensioner, be sure to note you need one o ring on both sides of the bushing, and remember to grease the bushing before reassembly.
Draw a scetch of the belt path first first. Remove the 4 bolt pully that will not allow the removal of the belt. Install new belt and replace pully.
Release the tensioner in the centre of the belt, and see what happens!

Anti clockwise is a normal bolt removal procedure. Does it have an "L" stamped on it? - meaning it's a left hand thread and removal is clockwise.

The GrandAm has an automatic belt tensioner built in. Loosening the belt manually would not be feasable without the removal of the belt tensioner at which point the belt would no longer fit.
