98 for escort zx2 and when it was cold the other day you put it in reverse and it was fine but when you put it in drive and hit the gas it just reves up and might move alittle for a minuite or so but?

probably the transmition try 1 or 2 if it has it if you can move in more than one gear you may have just lost one gear and the tranny and it can probably be rebuilt...also could be linkage try moving the shifter up and down over the drive before resting it on drive

Sounds to me like the tranny is gone...Your reverse gears are the last to go. You can try some of the Transmission Medic Fluids they have out....but it wont repair what is already gone it just might help you get it to the shop or the junk yard!
