Those sets are set to test the low pressure side only, a professional set will do both, as you put refrigerant into the system it is common for the pressure to give a false high reading until the system stabilizes, especially if you let liquid r134 enter, the can should always be upright, allow the refrigerant to flow into the system on it's own, the pressure in the can is higher than the system is so it will take it as it equalizes. Try it again, I think it will take more.
