In the Early Dynastic Period about 3150 BC, the capital was at Memphis.

Hyksos invaders took over much of Lower Egypt around 1650 BC and founded a new capital at Avaris.
In the New Kingdom around 1350 BC, the capital was moved to Thebes. However, Akhenaten built a new capital at Akhetaten (modern-day Amarna) which was abandoned on his death.
By 653 BC, the capital had moved to Sais.
With the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the great in 332 BC, the capital moved to the new city of Alexandria where it remained until the capital moved to Cairo in the present.
