We typically identify a person as a friend based on factors like familiarity, shared interests, mutual trust, and emotional connection. Strangers, on the other hand, are people we haven't met before or have limited interaction with. Recognition factors include physical appearance, behavior, voice, and mannerisms.
aha! well that's all about wanting to feel original. you don't want other people to get things that you have. you don't want people to compliment them on what they bought, even though you had it first. I'm sure even if you wasn't your friend, you'd still feel envious.
