In 1838 Grimké became the first woman to speak before a legislature in the United States. She addressed both the issue of slavery and the question of women's role in politics. In 1841 Dix visited a jail and reported her findings in a fiery speech calling for better treatment of mentally ill people. The legislature responded by creating special facilities for mentally ill people, separating them from criminals. Dix's reform efforts resulted in the establishment of more than 100 state hospitals for mentally ill people.
