In 1838 Grimké became the first woman to speak before a legislature in the United States. She addressed both the issue of slavery and the question of women's role in politics. In 1841 Dix visited a jail and reported her findings in a fiery speech calling for better treatment of mentally ill people. The legislature responded by creating special facilities for mentally ill people, separating them from criminals. Dorothea Dix lobbied for reform of the treatment of mentally ill. She pushed to have the more violent patients kept separately from those not violent. She opened her own hospital in 1845. Her writings made it to other states and she pushed for national changes in 1854. Nellie Bly wrote about the problems of the treatment of the insane.
