The weapons for hunting depended on what you were hunting and where, just as they do today. A bow was commonly used for hunting including deer and small game. Crossbows were used. They were not always very powerful and were not always used with arrows. Some were used with pellets. Lances were used, in particular when pigs were being hunted by horsemen. The lancers were on foot. There were also certain types of swords specifically made for hunting.
They were first used for hunting underground, for rats, and small rodents, because of their name Terriers, which means rodent!
