Heredity plays a role in the predisposition to mental disorders. Certain mental disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, have a genetic component that can increase the risk of developing the disorder if there is a family history. However, environmental factors also interact with genetic predispositions to influence the development of mental disorders.
Hereditary hypercoagulation disorders may not be prevented. Genetic and blood testing may help determine a person's tendency to develop these disorders
Not all depression is caused by inherited factors, but there is a very strong hereditary link. This could be due to a tendency to inherit low seratonin levels, which is one of the causes of depression.
Schizophrenia is not caused by emotional trauma. However, a pre-existing tendency may be triggered by such events. Schizophrenia is primarily hereditary, with a small sub-set of cases possibly being caused (or triggered) by head trauma.
Persons with schizophrenia do not have "split personality". Their illness is due to biochemical disturbance of the brain. The symptoms are as follows: - disconnected and confusing language - poor reasoning, memory and judgment - high level of anxiety - eating and sleeping disorders - hallucinations or hearing and seeing things that only exist in the mind of the consumer - delusions or persistent false beliefs about something (i.e. that others are controlling their thoughts) - deterioration of appearance and personal hygiene -tendency to withdraw from others
Cirrhosis is not inherited, although a tendency to develop it could be. The best way to avoid it is maintain a healthy lifestyle and not drink excessive amounts of alcohol.
genetic linkage?
Physical traits like hair colour, tallness, the tendency to high blood pressure, diabetes or certain cancers, and even some personality traits, are inherited because they are expressions of the chemistry of your body that are determined by the genes you received from your parents. THere is evidence that the tendency to chronic depression is inherited, as it is related to the chemistry of a person's brain, again: regulated by the genese in the nucleus of each cell. Behavioural traits, like arrogance, humility, generosity, religious devotion, patriotism, diligence, kindness CAN be affected by one's internal chenistry, but for the most part are learned as a child either from the beaviour of one's family or peer group, or by the beaviour of the community around the developing child. Inherited and learned traits are intertwined, though: the tendency to be depressed can be blunted by observing the ability of the people around the developing child to deal with their own internal demons. The natural tendency to be curious can be crushed by a monolithic education system that discourages innovation (I have issues....)
My husband's Mother has Lupus and he has psoriatic arthritis. I believe that all autoimmune disorders have a tendency to be hereditary. My eldest son has psoriasis.
