Like wildfire. If you met someone with the plague once, on a passing chance while you were walking somewhere, and shook their hand then just walked away, there would be a good chance you would get it.

Bubonic Plague still exists but is extremely rare. After contracting the disease, it can kill you in anywhere from two days to a week. The most devastating outbreak was in Europe from 1347-1351 when an estimated 1/3 - 1/2 of the population was killed.

While the worst of the Black Death was from 1347 to the early 1350s, the bubonic plague never quite left Europe. Just over a decade or so later there was an outbreak known as the "teenager's plague" where the many young people who been born after the major epidemic of 1348, became common victims. This was due to the fact that, as they were not survivors of the main epidemic, they had no immunity to the disease and so were more vulnerable.
