Eve was tempted by the serpent. Many would say that she is blameless, that the devil made her do it. The problem is that no one can be made to do anything. Genesis 3:6 pretty clearly identifies Eve's motives: "When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it." Just so it's clear: Good for food, Pleasing to the eye,Desirable for gaining wisdom.
She wanted to become like God (Genesis 3:5).
One point that Emilia Lanier brought out was her feeling that Eve took the fruit in innocence, to give to her husband out of 'love'.

A by-motive is a hidden motive.
An ulterior motive is a motive that they have beyond the main motive. They often do not show that they have this motive and it is often not good. The ulterior motive is almost always has it for their own good only.
