# Ask the church elders to apply oil to your skin and pray for you. "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up." (James 5:14-15) It is interesting to note that the churches that literally put this into practice also are quite literal in their desire to seek the best medical attention when necessary. Prayer never needs to exclude medicine and cannot ever be construed so from New Testament teaching. However, if God grants a healing then medicine will not be necessary, nor can medicine cure all illnesses anyway.
Most times the doctor will be God's agent of healing, but even before that the human body with its many created healing mechanisms will be at work, although this is often not enough in serious cases of either illness or injury. It is quite a natural thing for a Christian to turn to Jesus first, in whatever need they have.

For a Christian, the disadvantage is that the books most important to his faith are in the New Testament. Anyone reading only the Old Testament and not what is now known about the history of the times and biblical scholarship on the Old Testament, the disadvantage is that the reader must take everything literally and can not have an informed view as to how literally the Old Testament should be read.

The expectation of the New Testament is that Christian believers will be a part of the church, personally involved and in relationship with the other believers. The New Testament does not have anything to say about whether people who are not believing Christians should attend church - there's no rule about it. But there's no reason why they shouldn't. Most of the New Testament was written specifically to churches, not to individuals.
