No. The Bible was not written "to" people living in the 21st century. To say Christians today should follow all of the laws of the Old Testament would mean that we would be stoning our disobedient children to death. In the New Testament, the sabbath and other matters of law were viewed as a shadow of the reality that has been revealed (Col. 2:16-23), and the sabbath became a symbol of the heavenly rest to come (Hebrews 4:1-11). The Pharisees used to give Jesus a hard time because of His many deeds and actions that occurred on the sabbath. Jesus said to them "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath" (Mark 2:27-28). Jesus also said in Matthew 12:12 "Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days."

Another Answer:

The 1st day of the week, or Sunday, is not the Sabbath of God. It is the last day of the week beginning at sunset Friday and ending at sunset Saturday. This may be easily proven in the Scriptures.

Jesus came to remove the inordinate man-made rules the Pharisees put upon the Sabbath rest (at least 39 additional burdens). Jesus, as Lord of the Sabbath, shows us that we are to stop our usual daily works and concentrate on the God of Creation. However, if someone needed help or any other good works, it was permissible for another to do so on the Sabbath. If someone needed to eat like King David and his men did, they may obtain food (raided the storage bins on Sabbath). The Sabbath is not a burden to mankind - it is a rest.

Jesus also taught that He did not come to destroy the Law but to 'fill to the rim' its meaning - adding the unrevealed meaning of it prior to this - the Spiritual meaning of it. He taught that we are to live by every Word of God and that one jot or tittle would not be lost until His 2nd Coming when God will write His Eternal Law upon our hearts.

The only amendments to the Old Covenant was that of our Eternal High Priest doing away with the Levitical order and the Sacrificial Laws established about 1 year after the Exodus. Jesus is our Perfect Sacrifice and no other is needed for the forgiveness of Sin. The strict enforcement of the 'letter of the Law' was modified by Jesus' teaching of the Spirit of the Law where mercy reigns (think of Mary Magdelene here) and forgiveness is granted to all who repent (think of thief on the Cross with Jesus). Our God is a God of Love and Jesus is now the Judge of mankind and no man may murder another for their interpretation of the Law. We are to avoid sinners if they refuse to change, not kill them. Jesus will read each heart to determine what will happen to all in their individual Judgement process.

The Bible is written to be Eternal - for each and everyone in every time.
