The disadvantage of faxing is that it is slow and cumbersome. There are other technologies (such as email and scanning) that are much quicker and more convenient. As well fax has a "stereotype" of always getting lost in a pile of faxes at the main office.

There are two main advantages of faxing - #1 - it's a system that's still widely used, especially with government and international business. Everyone has to have one, because everyone has one. #2 - it's kind of like sending "registered mail" compared with email which is kind of like sending "regular mail" - with fax, there is a confirmation page that is printed to show that the message was received by the other fax machine. With email, unless that person confirms "I got your message", there's little to "prove" that the email was successfully received.
