Advantages:

Transistors are small, require very little power, run cool and much more reliable.

Because of the transistors the 2nd generation computers were small, faster and reliable.

Disadvantages:

Costly and had less memory than ICs.

Require much space than ICs.

Advantages: Everything we have today.

Disadvantages: None, really, until we have a better technology!

Before transistors, computers either used gigantic vacuum tubes that used tons of power and were very slow and unreliable (ENIAC used so much power it blacked out half of California when it first turned on!)

Or hand-operated switches, which really didn't save you any work at all.

Until a newer, better technology is completed, the 'disadvantages' are effectively nil.

Are Computers that used transistors are referred to as third-generation computers?

no, second generation. third generation computers used ICs.

What are features for second generation computer?

Second generation computers are often called transistorized computers. The transistorized computers are more advanced computers than the first generation of computers.

What did the second generation computers use to make them function?

discrete transistors

What year was 4th generation computers invented?

Fourth Generation Computers (which are Microprocessors) were invented through the development of Transistors. Transistors were created by William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brarttain. Therefore, it is hard to tell a specific inventor of the Microprocessor.

Did second generation computer was electrical or mechanical?

Second generation computers used electronic transistors. A small number used magnetic amplifiers.

What was the computer made of?

Several early digital computers were made of electromechanical devices similar to those used to build automatic dial telephone exchanges used at the time. First generation digital computers were made of vacuum tubes. Second generation digital computers were made of discrete transistors (most used germanium transistors but later some silicon transistors). Third generation digital computers were made of (hybrid, SSI, MSI, LSI) silicon integrated circuits. Fourth generation digital computers are made of microprocessors and other (VLSI, ULSI, etc.) silicon integrated circuits.

What are the advantages of third generation computers?

the computer of this generation could be developed after the development of integrated Circuits. integrated circuits were made of cilicon.A single IC could hold a no.of transistors and resistors.this was also called chip. the computer of this generation were 1000 times fast as compared to first generation computers and their cost was comparatively low.The memory of these computers was much more and data processing became very fast.

What are the Components of second generation of computers?

Discrete components. Most components were the same as in first generation computers, but vacuum tubes were replaced with transistors. Operating voltages were correspondingly reduced and circuits sped up as a result.

Advantages and disadvantages of fifth generation computers?

Advantages of 5th generation of computer: the developer try to design a machine which has ability to take decisions. the examples of AI is robot ,wireless communication. Disadvantages of 5th generation of computer: Source of energy required. machines rules on human beings.
