Historically, EDTA has been recommended as the anticoagulant of choice for hematological testing because it allows the best preservation of cellular components and morphology of blood cells. The use of EDTA for measuring cytokines, protein and peptides, and cardiac markers is described, with an outline of the protection of labile molecules provided by this anticoagulant. The use of EDTA in proteomics and in general clinical chemistry is also described in comparison with other anticoagulants and with serum samples Saravanabalaji. S ssbalaji_19@rediffmail.com

I just find out through my bad experience in the hospital the advantages for my blood using heparin over EDTA as an anticoagulant. I just released from the hospital today because of wrong diagnose. I have been hospitilized for 10 days. I went to doctor for my diaree but he checked my blood samples also in the lab and and find out that my platelet was 60,000 , since it was low i had to be admitted in the hospital right away eventhough i dindnt feel fever. The next day my platelets was 50,000 and the days after are 55000, 72000,86000 and drop to 82000, 83000 and finally drop again to 60,000 , the doctor thought originally that i had a blood dengue fever which is common sickness in Jakarta, Indonesia especially during a rainy season, but since my platelet count drop again to 60,000 the doctor check the method to count for platelet in laboratory, so two samples of blood were taken, one using regular EDTA and the other using Heparin as anticoagulant. They find out that using EDTA my platelete count is dropped again to 50,000 however the other samples using Heparin as anticoagulant shows that my platellete count170,000 which is normal, Harry P hrptrn@Yahoo.com

EDTA, lavender top tube

What is the anticoagulant used in this type of blood test?

Many test tubes use EDTA as the anticoagulant - but there are other anticoagulants used as well. Be more specific if you wish a more specific answer.

Full blood count EDTA what does that means?

Full blood count is a measure of the levels of your Heamoglobin, white/red bloodcells and more. EDTA is an anticoagulant used in the bloodtube to prevent the bloodsample to clot.

What color blood draw tube for CBC?

Lavender color tube containing the anticoagulant EDTA is ideal for CBC test.

What anticoagulant prevents coagulation of blood by removing calcium through the formation of insoluble calcium salt?

Sodium cirate, EDTA, Oxalate

What is the effect of decrease calcium in coagulation?

It hinders it. EDTA, a commonly used anticoagulant, works by chelating calcium. This also has the consequence that large volumes of blood transfusions causes calcium deficiency.

B-natriuretic peptide vacuntainer top color test?

Most likely its lavender top tube, EDTA anticoagulant. Please review chemistry or phlebotomy manual about BNP test in your laboratory. It may be different.

Why are the stoppers of vacutainer tubes color coded?

different colours represent different additive content (Ex. a red stopper shows there is no anticoagulant, while a lavender stopper indicates EDTA is present in the evacuated tube).
