Moses had a problem with anger and He did not obey God or honor Him in front of all Israel. God told him to speak to the rock to bring out water but instead, in a rage he hit the rock and said 'must we bring water out of this rock you rebels?' God was going to provide -even though the Israelites didn't deserve it but Moses, instead of honoring God for what was about to be another provision for their welfare, went into a rage.

God also expects a greater degree of accountability from leaders and so Moses was not to enter into Canaan for this reason.

This is recorded in Numbers 20 v 7 -13.

It is also important to remember that, even though Moses was indeed a great leader, he didn't put himself there - God chose him. God also performed great signs and wonders in Egypt and afterwards, as well as supporting Moses on quite a few occasions against the grumbling Israelites as well as against those who opposed Moses' leadership.

Moses disobeyed God's instructions when he struck a rock for water with great force.
