In most cases not very well. Many people's homes were destroyed, livestock taken, and there were numerous rapes and murders. And many of these offenses were against the freed slaves. The military governors appointed by the Johnson administration often put Northerners in position of authority, and these people were not very kind to the defeated southerners. Backed by the army, they did as they pleased, levying unfair taxes, stripping former Confederates of even the most menial jobs, and replacing them with former slaves. They controlled the money, and many southern people were destitute. It would be many years before reconstruction tyranny would end and the southerners resume their place in American society.
