Following the defeat of Poland, Hitler ordered his generals to attack France through Belgium and the Netherlands. This what happened in WW 1 and France expected the same strategy for WW 2. German generals were reluctant to begin an immediate offensive against the French.

Two reasons; 1. Poland was an allie of the United nations; attacking Poland would officaily start a war. 2. Russia was on the other side of Poland; Hitler did not have the resources to attack Russia and if he did it would lead to his downfall.

Militarily, Hitler succeded very quickly in invading and subduing half of Poland. The other half was occupied by the Soviet Union (Russia) as agreed by treaty with Hitler.
