The atomic bombs showed the Russians that the US was not afraid "to use the big stuff".
(Those were the words they actually used then.) Another problem was their maniacal leader Josef Stalin. He was willing to go against the allies at the end of the war even though he knew the US was a threat that could prevent him from keeping the countries in which he defeated the Nazis. The Cold War started mainly because of Josef Stalin.
