The Cherokee are a people native to North America, who, at the time of European contact in the sixteenth century, inhabited what is now the Eastern and Southeastern United States. Most were forcibly moved westward to the Ozark Plateau in the 1830s. They are one of the tribes referred to as the Five Civilized Tribes. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, they are the largest of the 563 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States. The Cherokee refer to themselves as Tsa-la-gi or A-ni-yv-wi-ya - which literally translates as "Principal People"
To be very honest there are a lot of books out there that claim to tell you all about the Cherokee, a few of them I have read - and mostly they only scratch the surface. There is not enough room on this entire website to answer this question (Sorry to say). As a general statement. The Cherokee (Tsalagi) were an agricultural based hunter gatherer tribal unit that was forced to relocate in 1838. This relocation is termed the "Trail of Tears" and one of the most famous actions involving the tribe. Since then the Cherokee have been located in two main locations (Oklahoma & North Carolina) with smaller tribal units and or individuals spread out across the globe. Currently the Cherokee have the largest US population of native enrolled members, and almost everyone in the southern states can claim some native bloodlines to the Cherokee. Contrary to popular opinion, there is no such thing as a "Cherokee Princess" or any other such 'rank' among the Cherokee.
By law "The Cherokee Nation" is the official name of the Cherokee government located in Eastern Oklahoma. As a general term the Cherokee nation refers to the groups that make up tribes of Cherokee People.
They were a "Tree People" - by ancient definition. Modernly they were an agricultural hunter gatherer tribe, stone age technology.

Yes. According to writer-historian Wyndham Robertson, the Milams are blood descendants of the original Powhatan Nation (published Virginia- 1887). The family has produced 2 principal chiefs in 2 different tribes: J.B. Milam of the Cherokee Nation (served 1938-1949), and James Milam of the Seminole Nation (1979-1985). Milams are listed on the Dawes Rolls and the Gion-Miller Rolls. They are considered one of the first families of the Cherokee Nation and some Milams are members of the Creek Nation.
