Gas plasma technology
LED
Some do, some don't. Older flat panel displays use a flat shaped florescent lamp. Newer flat panel displays use white LED's which use less current and produce less heat. This has the effect of extending battery life on portable devices. LEDS are also less susceptible to shock damage.
Merits of flat panel displays include slim design, energy efficiency, and wide viewing angles. Demerits may include higher cost compared to traditional displays, potential for screen burn-in with OLED technology, and limited color accuracy in some cheaper models.
Yes they are called flatpanels. but so are TFT/Plasma displays which use a different technology altogether. Flatpanel describes what it looks like not necessarily the display technology.
A flat panel display is an HDTV or computer monitor that is lighter and significantly less thick than a regular CRT television and they are flat in nature hence the name.
A plasma display panel is a flat panel display common to large TV displays 30 inches plus. They are called "plasma" because the technology uses small cells containing electrically charged gases or more commonly known as fluorescent lamps.
Plasma display (PDP) can be defined as a type of flat panel display common to large TV displays 30 inches (76 cm) or larger. They are called plasma displays because the technology utilizes small cells containing electrically charged ionized gases, or what are in essence chambers more commonly known as fluorescent lamps.
LCD flat panel displays.

TFT stands for thin-film transistor. This is the technology for the ultimate LCD display. LCD monitors, also called flat panel displays, are replacing the old style cathode ray tubes (CRTs) as the displays of choice. Nearly all LCD monitors today, including mobile phones, use TFT technology.
Jian Sheng Liu has written: 'The conductivity enhancement of tin oxide for flat panel displays'
Scientists created the first flat panel monitors in 1964 at the University of Illinois. This new invention had a better quality of pictures and revolutionized technology.
