The involvement of the USA and other country's in Vietnam was the result of the waining popularity of the corrupt us backed South Vietnamese government being in danger of being deposed by a Communist government with far more popular backing. In Those days the Americans in particular were almost hysterical in theyr opposition to a communist system of government. any many well positioned Americans made a great deal of money out of opposing it. A it turned out Communism took care of itself in the end and is now just about defunct.

You need to go back quite a ways to understand. For some unknown (it is really known) reason, the French and the Americans and others thought they could use Vietnam to their advantage militarily and economically. What they did not understand , however, was the history of the Vietnamese people and their country. And for that we paid dearly. Vietnam had been invaded many times in the past and when the French tried to take it in the 1940's, the people of Vietnam were not going to allow it to happen. The French did not see the tenacity of the people and to what lengths they would go to protect their country.
