The involvement of the USA and other country's in Vietnam was the result of the waining popularity of the corrupt us backed South Vietnamese government being in danger of being deposed by a Communist government with far more popular backing. In Those days the Americans in particular were almost hysterical in theyr opposition to a communist system of government. any many well positioned Americans made a great deal of money out of opposing it. A it turned out Communism took care of itself in the end and is now just about defunct.

North Vietnamese Army (NVA) invaded South Vietnam.

North Vietnamese Air Force (NVAF) officially fought over their own nation (skies over North Vietnam).

North Vietnamese Navy did engage US Navy warships in the Tonkin Gulf.

North Vietnam was on the offense in the Vietnam War. The US/allies were on the defense. However, the US Air Force & US Navy (air units) were the only branches of the US/allies actually attacking North Vietnam on their own soil during the whole war. Another words the USAF/USN were the only anti-communists forces (less covert tms) actually conducting OFFENSIVE strikes against enemy territory (bringing the war home to North Vietnam itself).
