Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian born explorer and map-maker. He was hired as a navigator for the Spanish. The American continents are named after him, possibly because he was one of the first people to survey the coasts of the landmasses.

Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence in what is now Italy in 1454. He was an early explorer, a navigator and a trader. Vespucci had two older brothers and one younger. He was well educated and collected books and maps. He studied astronomy but was more interested in trade and exploring. He eventually went to Spain to work in trade where he helped to outfit ships for long voyages.

He eventually crossed paths with Christopher Columbus in Spain when Columbus returned from his first voyage and Vespucci helped him prepare for his later voyages. Vespucci was himself extremely interested in sailing, navigating and exploring and he eventually embarked on his own voyages, at least three in number, to Central and South America. He was sponsored by Spain, later Portugal, and was seeking a more speedy route to China. He was one of the first explorers to realize that those places he visited were part of a "New World", a new continent, and were not part of Asia. Unfortunately, like Columbus, he took native people from the Bahamas back to Spain as slaves.

There were no accurate maps of the world at that time. North and South America were named by a German map maker in his honor. Vespucci is reported to have died of malaria in Seville, Spain in 1512 but no official record has been found. His widow, Maria Cerezo, was granted a pension in Spain in recognition of her husband's great services.

Among the places he is reported to have visited are Portugal, Guyana, Trinidad, Bahamas, Haiti, Brazil, Patagonia and Hispaniola.
