An ION

A positive ion is named a CATION e.g. Na^+ , Mg^2+ etc.,

A negative ion is named an ANION e.g. Cl^- , O^2- e.tc.,

When they are ions they are NOT called atoms, but ions.

What do you call an atom that gains or loses electrons?

An atom that gains or loses electrons is called an ion. If it gains electrons, it results in a negative ion called an anion. If it loses electrons, it results in a positive ion called a cation.

What does an atom become if it gains or loses electrons?

An ION. Ions are divided into two classes. CATIONS ;positive ions e.g. Na^(+) ANIONS ; negative ions e.g Cl^(-)

When the number of electrons in an atom changes what is the new atom called?

When an atom loses or gains electrons, it becomes an ion.

When an atom gains or loses electrons it is called an?

covalent/ionic bonding.

When an atom gains or loses electrons it has an electrical charge. It is known as?

It is called an ion.

What is a neutral atom that gains or loses electrons?

A neutral atom that subsequently gains or loses one [or more] electrons is called an ion. If it gains an electron [or electrons] it will have a negative charge. If it loses an electron [or electrons] it will have a positive charge.

When an atom combines chemically with another atom it either gains loses or share what?

It either gains, loses, or shares electrons.

What is an atom that gains and loses an electron and has an electric charge?

When an atom gains electrons, negatively charged anions are formed. When an atom loses electrons, positively charged cations are formed.

What Atom picks up or loses electrons and gains a charge?

An atom that has lost or gained an electron or electrons is called an ion. When an atom loses an electron, it forms a positive ion because the protons then outnumber the electrons. When an atom gains an electron, it forms a negative ion because the electrons now outnumber the protons. A positive ion is called a cation (pronounced "cat-ion" not "ca-shun.") A negative ion is called an anion (pronounced "an-ion" not "an-yun.")
