For example, James Watt's steam engine succeeded, since steam is gas, which take's up a lot of space, and puts pressure, pushing the pedal/wheel, which will lead to some more pedals and wheels to be pushed and turned. This equals to the whole machine working, plus it is more efficient than water since you can create steam by heating water, but you don't have the water's force all the time, which causes the whole thing to slow down. It is believed that James Watt required this idea from a tea kettle belonging to his mother.
