Rome fell in 410 BC with the invasion of the Barbarian tribes. When the Visigoths took Rome the empire was done. This set in motion a 1000 years of chaos since the Roman government kept all the roads, bridges, and government/military intact. With this gone no one had any protection or services. People had to fend for themselves to survive , so little kingdoms and serfdom's were created and people depended them for protection and services. It was a very dark time in Europe and it wasn't until the Crusades that Europe started to come out of it.

The effects of the fall of the Roman Empire sent Europe into chaos. Barbarian armies plundered the border lands and some tried to rule certain parts of the west. People's standard of living fell and education and the knowledge of the ancients was lost to the general public. (Only the monks in the monasteries kept the ancient knowledge alive) The fall of the Roman empire in the west ushered in the period of history known as the Dark Ages. In the East the empire continued until 1453.

The results of the fall of the Roman Empire were vast and numerous. First, ill start with the east because the story of the eastern Roman Empire is its own answer in its own right. the East was made the site of the new imperial capital, situated on the Bosphorus on the site of the old Graeco-Roman settlement Byzantium, later dedicated by the Christian Roman Emperor Constantine I Nova Roma, but for a thousand years the city would be known as Constantinople, the city of Constantine. After 476 the west was forever finished, but the East continued to rule until 1453 when the city was finally conquered by the Ottoman Empire under Mehmet II, the last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI died fighting.

In the West, after the fall of Rome, a number of things happened. Different barbarian kingdoms sprouted up throughout the former Roman provinces. The Vandals were established in North Africa. Spain saw the rise of the Visigothic Kingdom. Gaul (France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) witness the dramatic rise of the Franks. Britain had been abandoned by the Romans in the early 400's and saw the invasion of different tribes such as the Angles, Jutes, and Saxons. Italy had the Ostrogothic Kingdom.

All of these kingdoms fought each-other and themselves in numerous wars. They were Christians, but not Orthodox or Catholic. Except for the British, who lost their Christian identity for a number of centuries, they were Arians, who were the followers of Arius, a Christian preacher who said that Jesus Christ was not divine, but man who was put here at a specific time by God to spread his message. This teaching was condemned at different Ecumenical councils that met throughout the 4th century.

These kingdoms all had interactions with the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantines conquered the Vandal kingdom, the Ostrogothic Kingdom, and would war with the Visigoths and Franks on more than one occasion.

After the Byzantines lost a majority of their conquests in Italy, Christianity saw the rise of the Papacy as a new beacon of light to guide the subjects, because they felt that with the new wave of Lombard invaders that the Eastern Byzantines could no longer protect them and guide them as the leaders of the Christian world.

There was also an almost complete extinction of learning and literacy throughout the West. Except for the monks of Ireland who worked continuously to preserve the ancient texts their monasteries contained, the Eastern Empire flourished. Towns and cities fell into ruin as the population dwindled. Roads fell into disrepair and life expectancy was allot lower than in the heyday of the roman Empire.

Although this period is commonly called the dark ages, the east thrived. It was during these so called dark ages that the Byzantine Empire reached its apogee, regaining much of the territory that had been lost to the Muslims during the 7th and 8th centuries. It wasn't until the early 11th and 12th centuries do we begin to see minor nations taking on the aspects of the countries they would become in our own modern history. Britain had been conquered by the Norman adventurer William the Conqueror. France was starting to gain more influence over the previously rebellious barons and dukes. The Holy Roman Empire was starting to fracture into the numerous state-lets that would characterize the German area of Europe for centuries.

With the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, its former lands split into kingdoms of the Germanic invaders and former Germanic allies of the Romans: the kingdom of the Franks in Gaul, the kingdom of the Visigoths in Spain and Portugal, the kingdom of the Sueves in north-western Spain, the kingdom of the Vandals in Tunisia and western Algeria and the kingdom of the Ostrogoths in Italy and the former Yugoslavia. All of these peoples, apart from the Franks who were pagans, followed the Arian doctrine of Christianity. All oft hem, except for the Ostrogoths, converted to Catholicism. There was a decline in trade and in urbanisation. The eastern part of the the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years.

The term fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, which crumbled under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. The eastern part of this empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years. The lands of the western part of the empire were divided up by the various invaders, who formed their own kingdoms. Eventually most of these lands were taken over by the kingdom of of the Franks. The Visigoths retained their kingdom in Spain and Portugal. The Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians migrated to Britain in waves and eventually took it over, creating Anglo-Saxon Britain.

When did the Western Roman Empire fall?

The most commonly used date is 476, but other dates are also used. Some historians just say 5th century, or the second half of the 5th century. Clearly it was a long, drawn out affair. The East Roman Empire survived until 1453. The name we use for it is the Byzantine Empire, but that name was never used at the time, and they were nearly always called the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.
