Such situations are possible, and do happen. If it happens you would be entitled to refuse to do work other than what you were hired to do. But consider these issues. Are you capable of doing that work? Does your employer really need you to do it? How offensive is it to you to be asked to do something other than what you were hired to do? Sometimes it is good to just be helpful. Businesses can succeed or fail depending upon the willingness of their employees to help out when needed. But in some situations you are actually being abused by your employer and shouldn't accept that abuse. So you have to judge the specific situation.

Why do supervisors like to be asked questions?
Supervisors like to be asked questions for many reasons. Some like to know that their employee's are trying to learn more about their line of work and maybe even help that employee move up in position. Sometimes managers/supervisors like to be kept on their toes when asked something they are not sure of it helps everyone grow. Honestly that is the key role of a supervisor to find ways to make the operation move as smoothly as possible with as little hiccups along the way and your question may be the answer they were looking for. finally a question not asked is a question never answered.
