The modern word sistrum is from classical Greek seistronfrom the verb meaning "to shake"; it refers to any kind of rattle used as musical accompaniment but in particular the metal jingling rattles associated with the worship of Isis in ancient Egypt.
The Egyptian word was spelled sSSt in hieroglyphs, sometimes transliterated as sesheshet or seshesh - obviously an attempt to mimic the sound of the rattle.
It was made with a short vertical handle, to the top of which was fixed a flat metal strip in a long, curved shape, through holes in which horizontal metal rods were loosely fitted. These rods sometimes had disks of metal and they could rattle and jingle when shaken, creating a pleasant sound.
Because the worship of Isis was carried into Roman religion the sistrum was also known to the Romans, who used the Greek term but added their own -um ending to it.
