Your Achilles tendon is located on the back of your ankle, just above your heel. Any exercise that moves your foot around at the ankle will stretch and strengthen your Achilles tendon. Try flexing your foot down and back up again in sets of ten.

What is the of the function of tendons in the leg?

Same as any tendon anywhere - to link muscle to bone.Tendons connect muscle to muscle.

What does tendonitis effect?

Tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendons. Tendonitis most commonly occurs with repetitive motion or strain on a specific tendon. For example: Tennis Elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, occurs more commonly in Tennis players because of the repetitive movement and strain on the lateral tendon over the bony prominence called the lateral epicondyle. As the tendon, which controls the extensor muscles of the forearm and wrist, moves over the bony prominence, irritation develops as the synovial sheath surrounding the tendon wears away resulting in tenosynovitis, as the wearing continues, the tendon itself becomes irritated and micro tears occur in the fibrous tendon resulting in inflammation of the tendon which is called tendonitis. It is difficult to differentiate between tenosynovitis and tendonitis, thus inflammation of the tendon at any stage is usually referred to as tendonitis. Bursitis can be commonly mistaken for tendonitis. Underneath the tendons is a fluid-filled sac called bursa, as the tendon rubs across the bursa, irritation and inflammation develop into bursitis. Bursitis is normally diagnosed by palpation of the bursa by pushing underneath the affected tendon. If the palpation causes pain, bursitis, if palpation of the tendon causes pain, tendonitis. Pain without stiffness or pain on stretching is normally associated with bursitis also.

What jobs do ligaments and tendons do?

ligaments connect the bones together. tendons connect the muscle to boneLigaments are the skeletal components that connect bones to other bones to create a joint, a flexible structure that is capable of movement and of bearing both weight and external forces applied to it. Ligaments are made of collagen, formed into short, fibrous bands. All of the body ligaments are important to efficient physical movement. However, the ligaments that are of special significance are the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the connector between the femur and the tibia (lower leg bone) essential to knee function, and the ulnar cruciate ligament (UCL), an elbow structure essential to the success of any baseball pitcher.Tendons have a similar construction to that of ligaments: they are strong, fiber-like connectors. However, rather than connecting bone to bone, tendons connect muscle to bone, providing stability and a significant degree of resistance to external forces. Large tendons such as the Achilles tendon, which connects the gastroceus (calf muscle) and the calcaneus (heel bone), are able to withstand force due to the flexing qualities of the supple collagen that forms a large portion of the tendon structure. As with an ACL or UCL injury, a tear or rupture of the Achilles tendon is a debilitating occurrence.

What are plantar fascia exercises?

In younger people the plantar fascia is also intimately related to the Achilles tendon, with a continuous fascial connection between the two from the distal aspect of the Achilles to the origin of the plantar fascia at the calcaneal tubercle. However, the continuity of this connection decreases with age to a point that in the elderly there are few, if any connecting fibers.

Are Achilles tires any good?

What nerve is tested for Achilles reflex?

1. Have the subject remove a shoe and sock and position the knee on the seat of a chair. 2. tap the Achilles tendon sharply with a reflex hammer. 3. observe the foot for any motion- the expected response should last between 100 and 300 msec so it may be difficult to visualize.

What are the tough connective bands that connect the bones?

How do I treat a tear in my Achilles tendon?

My first advice would be to consult your doctor. Depending on the degree of tear, surgery might be required. The Achilles tendon is a marvelous piece of equipment your body possesses. The Achilles can sustain a tear, and if stretched lightly to keep it from becoming too taught, a period of rest may be all you need. if left untreated to will compensate by the rest of the tendons and ligaments around the ankle joint becoming "locked" evolution has told your body to protect you feet and ankles, for survival. Scar tissue may form around the injured area, causing it to become "splinted" proper light stretching may help to reduce any resulting stiffness.

Achilles tendinitis?

DefinitionAchilles tendinitis is inflammation, irritation, and swelling of the Achilles tendon (the tendon that connects the muscles of the calf to the heel).Alternative NamesTendinitis of the heelCauses, incidence, and risk factorsThere are two large muscles in the calf: the gastrocnemius and the soleus. These muscles generate the power for pushing off with the foot or going up on the toes. The large Achilles tendon connects these muscles to the heel. These are important muscles for walking. This tendon can become inflamed, most commonly as a result of overuse or arthritis, although inflammation can also be associated with trauma and infection.Tendinitis due to overuse is most common in younger individuals and can occur in walkers, runners, or other athletes, especially in sports like basketball that involve jumping. Jumping places a large amount of stress on the Achilles tendon.Tendinitis from arthritis is more common in the middle-aged and elderly population.SymptomsSymptoms usually include pain in the heel when walking or running. The tendon is usually painful to touch and the skin over the tendon may be swollen and warm.Signs and testsThe doctor will perform a physical exam and look for tenderness along the tendon and for pain in the area of the tendon when you stand on your toes.Imaging studies can also be helpful. X-rays can help diagnose arthritis, and an MRI will show inflammation in the tendon.TreatmentTreatment usually involves:IceNonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofenRestPhysical therapyYou should limit any activities that make the symptoms worse.Occasionally, a cast, brace, or boot may be used to keep the heel still and allow the swelling to go down.If these treatments fail to improve symptoms, surgery may be needed to remove inflamed tissue and abnormal areas of the tendon.Expectations (prognosis)Conservative therapy usually helps improve symptoms. However, symptoms may return if activities that cause the pain are not limited, or if the strength and flexibility of the tendon is not maintained.Surgery, if needed, has been shown to be very effective in improving pain symptoms.ComplicationsAchilles tendinitis may make you more likely to have an Achilles rupture. This condition usually causes a sharp pain, like someone hit you in the back of the heel with a stick. Surgical repair is necessary, but difficult because the tendon is not normal.Calling your health care providerIf you have pain in the heel around the Achilles tendon that is worse with activity, contact your health care provider for evaluation and possible treatment for tendinitis.PreventionPrevention is very important in this disease. Maintaining strength and flexibility in the muscles of the calf will help reduce the risk of tendinitis. Overusing a weak or tight Achilles tendon makes you more likely to develop tendinitis.
