You may be experiencing a lack of performance from your Autofocus because of either: 1. Your cameras/lens noticably slow AF motor 2. Poor lighting conditions 3. The incorrect AF mode is being used Depending on what situation is being focused, you may benefit from switching to manual focus for a particular picture (such as one with low light). You may also use a AF Illuminator if your camera has one to help the camera focus in the aforementioned low light scenario. It may be a good idea to practice using your cameras different AF modes to see how they react in various environments. Some autofocus modes prove to be optimal for different or unique situations, such as sports or other Photography with fast motion. The truth is, this problem could be due to a number of things.
