That stereotype is not true in the least. In some cases, an Asian may be more intelligent or talented, but it is the state of mind that counts. Due to tradition and pressure to do well, most parents are very attentive about their attitude and education, but this is not completely true, either. Some care as much as the average parent, while others can and will care more (or less). Higher standards in Asia have also encouraged this stereotype, but be aware that his is NOT TRUE.
A little bit of racism comes in here, too. If one looks at a precocious Japanese person (just choosing a random Asian nationality) and can only see that this person is Asian and smart, (more emphasis on noticing that this person is Asian) chances are that when they see another Asian, that is the way the will think. And it spreads.
In areas like New England, where the Asian population is scarce, that is the only thing that they will see in an Asian. In some towns, they have heard about Chinese and Koreans doing very well, and they apply that to the Asians that they see. In areas like LA, the Asian population is overwhelming, and they are treated and thought of like an ordinary person.
