The practice of removing a puppies tail is known as docking, or occasionally as banding. It is performed on certain breeds (such as Boxers, Dobermanns, Rottweilers and Schnauzers) when the puppies are only a few days old by a veterinarian. The tail is severed using a pair of curved surgical scissors without the use of anaesthetic, or a tight rubber band is wrapped around the tail to cut off the blood flow in the banding method. Docking was originally performed on working dogs to prevent tail injuries. However, today it is mainly performed for cosmetic reasons, as breed standards such as the Boxers' stipulate that they should have short tails. The practice is now illegal in many places due to the inhumane and unnecessary nature of the operation.
If you are wondering how short can a boxers tail be. it can only be as short a your pinkie finger because if it to short the dog will look like homer Simpson

According to the breed standard of the American Kennel Club (AKC), a Lakeland Terrier's tail should be docked so that the tip is in level with the occiput when the dog is standing in a show position. However, if you are not showing your dog, there is no reason why you should dock your Lakeland Terrier's tail. Docking causes great pain to the dog, and may also be illegal in some countries such as the UK.
If your dog was born tailless then there will not even be a stub and the tail will be completely missing. Docked tails usually leave a small amount of the tail intact so the dog will have some of its tail left. The natural bobtail gene is very rare and it is unlikely that your dog was born like it.
You really shouldn't cut a boxers tail or ears. Its mean and cruel. It should be natural. Although some breeds need their tails cut boxers don"t

Depends on the breed of Poodle you have. There are Standard, Miniature, etc. Poodles. You should take your poodle in to your Veterinarian before it is 5 days old to have its tail docked. Your Vet will know the correct length to dock it at. If you have to have it docked after that age, then it will be a regular surgery. Should only be done by a Veterinarian and the Vet will know the correct length.
Medically, no, it is not necessary to dock (snip or shorten) a bulldog's tail. However, breed standards in the US and possibly other countries require a bulldog's tail to be docked for show purposes, and most people who own a bulldog will have the tail docked. No. According to the AKC breed standards, a purebred English Bulldog's tail isn't docked, it's naturally short.
