Maltese will normally bark when someone is at the door (or when they think someone is near the door), but are usually friendly when the door is opened. However, until they know the person better, they will be more reserved and observant of the guest during the first minute or two(to protect their owner(s). After the first few minutes (at most), the Maltese is eager to greet the new person--unless they are suspicious of whomever this person is, in which case they will keep distance from him/her. However, aggressive behavior is not normal for a Maltese, but if you have noticed this type of behavior in your Maltese, it is best to keep him/her in a different room, a cage, or hold them-- so they do not bite the guest. One thing that many Maltese do while meeting a new person is to excessively lick the person. If you notice this conduct is starting to bother your visitor, it is best to cage or hold your Maltese. (if you don't , they will continue to jump on or lick your guest).
Sorry for getting off track.... the answer is yes, they are ver good guard dogs. Because of how vigilant they are of their surroundings, they will almost always bark when they hear the sound of someone nocking on your door or buzzing a bell. However, this can get annoying if you live in an apartment building, where unfamiliar people are constantly walking up and down the public hallway. Such an environment will not make for a very peaceful household, or a calm Maltese---but after a while, he/she should become accustomed to these conditions--especially if it is the environment your Maltese has known for most of its life. If you notice your Maltese shows aggressive behaviors towards new people, you should see your vet and ask them what they suggest you do (many times, you will be recommended to animal behavior specialist, who will help you solve these problems).
Try RSPCA, all the dogs there deserve a good home.

Maltese's are wonderful dogs to have! Chihuahuas are too very smart but they do have an attitude and if you catch them on there bad day they WILL bite. I had like 20 chihuahuas and all of them like to bite hard. But since it's a mix i say if it takes after the Maltese it will make a wonderful dog :)

Big dogs are very bad for a childs life. a small dog such as a maltese is worthy and voted by many children.
