Most of them do. This is one of the traits inherited by Spanish colonialism, where the society was segregated and had marked differences among classes, which more often than not, were defined by race alone:
- At the top of the society were the Peninsulares, or people born in Spain.
- They were followed by criollos, or people of European ancestry born in the Americas.
- In a distant third were the mestizos, or people born out of interracial marriages between Spanish and Native American Tlaxcalans, who helped Hernan Cortes conquer the Aztec Empire in 1521.
- On the fourth spot were the Native Americans (Mayan, Nahuatl or other minor ethnic groups) who were almost annihilated during colonial times due to disease and slavery.
- Finally, people of African ancestry who were brought to Mexico to man plantations and mines in southern and eastern Mexico.
