The official position of the church on the matter is in the related links below.

Gay members of the LDS church are not asked to do anything that non-gay members are asked to do. That being, not to have sex out of wedlock. If someone is attracted to people of the same gender, and he or she wishes to stay in good standing with the church, it would be appropriate to seek counsel from a bishop to get guidance on how to deal with this matter.

As long as one does not act upon their impulses and have sex outside of marriage, and this assumes the individual is otherwise living by the same promised other members made at baptism, then such an individual would remain in good standing in the church.

There are several resource links below the answer box. One of them is a talk by several LDS church leaders who have responded to similar questions about same gender attraction.

Answer

Well, it depends on whether you want to diminish the same-sex attraction and overcome the homosexual behavior (as the church asks), or whether you want to effectively leave the church and engage in homosexual activities, but still have friends that were raised in the Mormon culture.

If you want to diminish the attraction and overcome you homosexual behavior, there is a good site to use as a resource link below. Evergreen International espouses the belief that this is the appropriate action. Evergreen International is one of many organizations helping people to overcome homosexual attractions and behaviors.

If you want to leave the church and pursue a homosexual lifestyle, then organizations such as LDS Reconciliation and Affirmation teach that God still loves you and understands you and accepts you just as you are, just he made you and that you shouldn't be denied a loving relationship in your life. Obviously, that would be outside the church's teachings.

Please note that engaging in homosexual activities can get you kicked out of the church, and that no one that actively pursues that lifestyle really represents the church's teachings.

God loves everyone, whether they choose to live a homosexual lifestyle or not, and whether they stay in the church or not. Everyone has to choose a direction in life, and the consequences that go along with it.

The church's stance is that being attracted to members of the same sex is a life challenge that needs to be overcome. However, I am presenting both sides so that you can get support either way.

The church teaches to love and respect all people as sons and daughters of God. Generally some members are hostile, some not so and others don't care. While having 'gay' feelings is not a sin, taking part in acts and lifestyle is. Gays can remain members of the church but celibacy is required others generally they are excommunicated from the church. The church opposes gay marriage, partnerships and relationships - as said that lifestyle is a major sin and incompatible with the church. We are generally very conservative on these issues but we stress love and compassion not hate. I remember reading someone saying being gay in the church is like hell on earth and beyond belief, but I don't know.

It's a little complicated.

Mormon attitude towards homosexuality is similar to that of a lot of Protestant churches, along the basic lines of "love the sinner, hate the sin". You can be a Mormon and be "homosexual" in the sense of being attracted to members of your own sex. However, actual homosexual activity is forbidden, because the church holds that any sexual activity outside of a (heterosexual) marriage is immoral.

Yes, there are many gay Mormons. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) teaches that it is not a sin to have homosexual thoughts, feelings, inclinations, or temptations. Many have these thoughts and feelings although they may be unwanted and uninvited. However, it is sinful to give in to the temptation and have a sexual relationship with a member of the same sex. Gay men and women are welcome in the church and have near full participation in all aspects of church life (They can be ordained, preach, and participate or officiate in all sacred ordinances, but they cannot be Bishops or youth leaders), but they are expected to avoid participating in homosexual sex acts. Of course this is very difficult, but there are many faithful Mormons who do so. Those Mormons who do participate in sexual relationships or even a marriage with those of the same gender are still welcome to attend services and participate like a regular member off the congregation, but may not preach or hold a position within the church until they repent and confess their sin to a Bishop. Gay baptismal candidates are expected to remain celibate for a certain period of time before being considered.

Homosexuality is an innate trait, so permission to be gay is irrelevant. However, some religions do not allow the free expression of sexual orientation. For example, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) officially condemns homosexuality, and openly gay members may be excommunicated.

Is it God's will to show Mormonism hypocrisy as they have gay men holding the priesthood and loved by their God as long as they never reveal their secret?

AnswerIt is always dangerous to speak on behalf of God's will.Mormon AnswerNowhere in the Mormon Church does it say that Mormon high priests cannot reveal that they are gay. Gay people are welcomed in the Church, so long as they live by the standards that every Church member is expected to follow (including no sexual relations outside of marriage or with someone of the same gender). Both the Church and it's members have no problem with gay priests who are living the standards of the church, and they may 'come out' with their homosexuality or leave it a secret - that is their choice. It is not hypocrisy in any way - gay Mormon men are expected to follow the same standards as straight Mormon men, and any man who follows these standards has the same rights and privileges, except that gay Mormon men are required to be lonely.

Is the church really intervening in the state?

Do people know that the Mormons already accept gay men into the priesthood as long as they have wives and are married in the temples so they do get into Heaven?

The question makes assumptions about the behavior of the Mormon church that is unsubstantiated but nonetheless, it warrants an answer of sorts. Most people do not know this claim about the Mormon Church because most people are not Mormon. For those people outside the church, the views and decisions made by the Mormon church about gay priests are of little consequence. As a non-Mormon, the presence or otherwise of a gay priest is of no importance to me because it has no impact on me. Therefore, I and others in a similar situation have little in the way of a valid opinion to put forward. For Mormons who are part of the church, the question has more relevance if, indeed, there is an issue of gay priests at all . It is a topic that should be discussed and debated within the church with the hope of resolving the issue within the teaching of the church. With that in mind, it is hardly appropriate within this forum to offer firm opinions or indeed, to discuss whether the question is based on fact or rhetoric. For that reason, the answer is protected from edits for the time being. Should any contributor wish to improve or adjust the answer with well though out and reasonable statements, the supervisor below or other supervisors are able to open the answer for editing on request.
