I just saw a badger in Durham, NC today (10/01/13). Thought it was a groundhog at first. Was a small badger, foraging along the edge of a field. My wife and I were able to get approx. 20 yards away. He seemingly was not alarmed at all. This is the first badger I've seen in the wild (grew up in Ohio, but have lived in North Carolina for almost 30 years).

I live in High Point. NC and have pondered the same! This is my second time seeing one in all of my 61 years. Right in my backyard near a creek in a heavily wooded and grassy area. I have picutres and a video.
