Well, despite that I'm a dog person I'd like to think that cats or dogs are more popular among certain types of people. For instance, someone that doesn't get out much, or that just doesn't like a high maintenance pet to look after would go for a cat, but those that want to fully interact with their pet (i.e. be able to wrestle and play games with), would lean more towards a dog.
All in all, I don't think either one is more popular, though I might be wrong. It's all a matter of opinion! ^^
Yepp im totally a dog person yet my friends have cats. so i think it might change
