Are cats smarter than a dog?

It depends on the intelligence test used. Intelligence tests for animals usually involve tricks, and rats score higher than cats on those tests. But critics say that those tests don't accurately measure cat intelligence. Studies have shown that rats are capable of "metacognition," (see related link) which was previously thought to belong only to humans and certain primates. Rats remember things, and even have a social interaction that might be called laughter. But rats are also studied a lot more than cats, so scientists know more about them.

* In addition to the above answer, rats are studied more than cats because rats genome is 98 - 99% similar to humans.

Considering that rats have metacognition, and they also learn similar to the way humans do - and as cats are not smarter than humans - it would show that rats quite possibly are more intelligent than cats. This answer and opinion is also based on the fact that Pigs are as smart as a 3 year old, and they say rats are quite close behind pigs with intelligence.

After owning many cats and rats in my 31 years, and watching them play and learn, rats are definitely smarter. Cats are smart only with things that are within their instinctive nature, or that have become a habit to them through long repetition, whereas rats learn many things that are outside the normal for an animal to learn. If you owned one, you would be quite surprised as to what you can teach them, and teach them very quickly too.

Mostly, cats are smarter, but sometimes you'll find a very smart dog who could outsmart any cat.

That depends on your opinion. If you're a cat person, cats are smarter, if you're a dog person, dogs are smarter, and if you're a cat and dog person, like me, then it totally doesn't matter and you think they're both equally smart because you love them both equally. Of course some people could also say it depends on the individual cat or dog.

Dogs have been proven to more intelligent then cats, but cats are less maintenance. Dogs can be trained to do many tricks, though cats usually like to do their own thing. If thinking of getting a cat or dog, it depends on what you like, some people are cat people and some are dog people. It is true that cats are easier to care for, and are great pets, but dogs can do more with you, they exercise with you, and can be taught more. It is also proven that dogs may have evolved to live with humans, it has been proven that dogs use the same process as humans to recognise expressions, while cats don't. Even our closes relatives, orang-utans (93% human) don't do this. It is also proven that we can (to a certain extent) tell what a bark means from a recording, without knowing the situation.

A dog is more intelligent because you can teach them tricks, you can play with them and you can actually teach them discipline and behavior.

A cat on the other hand is intelligent but you can't really train a cat but I but you wish you could. Oops sorry I need to say more on topic, okay now where was I OH YEAH OK now felines aren't as smart as dogs because you are not able to train them because of their laziness and untrainable minds.
