Coral starts out alive, yes. Like all living things it can die if mis-treated. If left alone, it can live for an extremely long time -- several decades to centuries! The Great Barrier Reef off Australia is coral, and lives and grows.

Coral reefs arent alive. All it is is sea animals skeletons and they all float together and that is the answer to your question

Coral is alive,it is just semi-sentinent,which means it barely thinks. It can control its path, or choose when or when not to do something, it even has semen for reproduction purposes,it just has no emotion and character. Itsa mind is a dead hole.

Many think corals aren't alive, but actually they ARE alive. Have a look here: http://library.thinkquest.org/J002237/corals/introduction.htm
