They can be. For example, we might wish to engineer genes into a crop to prevent it from spreading unchecked. Also, the improvements in crops that protect them from pests reduce the needs of agricultural pesticides, and genetic improvements reducing the need for fertilizers also reduce nitrogen runoffs into lakes and streams. Genetically modified crops are a boon to mankind that should be embraced the same way we embrace all useful science. We must exercise caution, as always. No one lets children play around unprotected high voltage wires, even though we all allow electrical currents into our homes.

What are the advantages or disadvantages of conjugation?

Advantage: No new cells but genes are combined - an increase of genetic diversity, therefore good for evolution!! Two new organisms are genetically identical and share the common ways to survive in the same environment which can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the types of characteristics the organism had.

What does the Catholic Church believe about genetically modified food?

The Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ (see 1 Cor 12:12-14, Colossians 1:15-2:3). As such, the Church preaches the Good News of salvation to people, it brings Christ to people, and people to Christ. Genetically modified food is not exactly on its agenda as it is not included in revelation. Peter Cardinal Turkson, when addressing this issue pointed out the Church's belief that there is nothing in Christian belief either for or against modifying nature, and that Christian actions are never neutral. He also called for genetically modified foods to be labeled as such.

When did unicellular life evolve?

It is said, with good supporting evidence, that the first organisms on Earth were probably single-celled prokaryotes that were probably genetically similar to the organisms belonging to the domain Archaea. It was about 3 billion years ago.
