A hillbilly generally refers to someone who lives in the mountains and is detached from popular culture by virtue of the geographical distance; they don't have any ideological objections to it. A redneck is often (but not always) from the southern regions of the U.S. and makes a decision to place less emphasis on education and culture even when it's available, and instead values simpler, more base pursuits like sex, driving and drinking (in various combinations).

lemme tell you something, rednecks do not stink. that is if you take showers. there are some hardcore hillbillies out there who get so drunk all the time, they forget to take shower, but ill tell you this, im a redneck and i have friends that are redneck, and we i promise you, do not stink.
