Yes. To a horse, the herd means safety and survival. If he is all alone, the chances of him living are slim. He won't have to time to sleep because he won't have anyone to look out for predators while he rests. That's the main thing. He won't have other horses for companionship. Without other horses, he will constantly be stressed and he won't sleep- this will take a huge toll on him. He also doesn't have a lead mare to show him good water and food, and without all these things, he will live a miserable (and in the wild, a short) life.
