Sears uses several manufacturers to build tractors to sears specs. Most are made by Husqvarna and MTD. They recently partnered with Simplicity for the new high end 30 horsepower, I believe the model is CTX9500 and retails for about 6,500.00 dollars. Most rear engine riders are made by Murray or Snapper.

No. Craftsman , AYP , Husky , whatever have cloned the JD low end model. AYP Craftsman is a decent LAWNMOWER if cared for. A great value. The "Made for BOX STORE John Deere" is not the same one your Pappy plowed the fields with. It is made to compete with the Craftsman. Period. It uses the same engines and transaxles as its competitors, BUT IS NOT MADE IN THE SAME FACTORY. Anybody that says otherwise is WRONG. Buy the Craftsman, keep the extra cash. Move along. ToeCutter.
What kind of oil for a Craftsman 6.5 hp lawn mower?
Craftsman 6.5hp lawn mowers can use two kinds of oil--"HD 30" oil, which is a single-weight SAE 30, or the same oil you put in your car. (If you have a Honda lawn mower, you have to run multigrade oil in it.) I always have a case of 5W30 Castrol sitting there, and that's what I use because it's right there already. I also have some 15W40 Rotella on hand, but I wouldn't put that in a lawn mower--it's too thick. (Works good in a Cummins ISX, though.)

The short answer is yes. the John Deere 100 series mowers are made in Greeneville Tennessee. this is a highly automated factory employing up to 800 people at the peak of the season. the lawn tractors are shipped directly from the factory to dealers and to big-box stores. the units are identical and all use Briggs and Stratton engines.
