No, they are cowards and are not very strong. You could compare a hyena to a normal house dog.

Answer:
Let's use the spotted hyena (the largest hyena) as an example:

  • They have powerful forequarters and necks which similar to those of leopards.

  • The males are smaller than the females both in shoulder height and weight. The biggest specimens have been about 81,7 kg (180 lb)

  • The teeth are bone crushers and much stronger than those of dogs and wolves, bears, lions or leopards. Their bite exerts a pressure of 800 kgf/cm2 (11,400 lbf/in²)

Altogether a formidable animals far outclassing most common species (dogs, bears etc.) that you might have contact with.
As far as hunting alone, yes they do. By nature they are pack animals but sometimes go off hunting solo.
As far as being cowards, hey are smart enough to sty out of harm's way, but will kill and eat a wide range of prey including people.

Why is the leopard the worst enemy of the hyena?

Actually spotted hyenas and lions are actually mortal enemies because they are in direct competition for resources. Leopards are less dangerous to spootted hyenas because their solitary nature limits their ability to prove a serious threat to a clan of hyenas. The more solitary brown or striped hyenas may be more susceptible to Leopard attacks.

What is hyena enemies?

Mainly lions. The two species compete for many of the same prey species, and the bigger lion will kill hyenas. Hyenas retaliate by mobbing lions with overwhelming numbers, and driving the cats away. Leopards also compete with hyenas, but this solo hunter usually will drag it's prey up a tree, out of reach of hyenas. A solitary hyena would have no chance against a determined leopard, but hyenas usually travel in groups, and will steal the leopard's prey if it is too large to lift into the trees.

Would a pack of lions win against a pack of hyena's?

Although a pack of hyena's have been known to defend against and kill a solitary lion, IMHO a pack of lions would tear a pack of hyenas to shreads.
