Generally, the impatiens you find for sale in local garden stores are annuals. They're native to the warm, moist areas of South America, New Zealand and Australia. You may be able to find perennial impatiens in some gardening catalogs and online. These are more likely to come from Asia. They may still be tricky to maintain in the colder northern planting zones.
